Brought in an automatic that had been gaining about four minutes a day. They gave me a written outline before starting — I hadn't expected that. The watch came back on time, running within ten seconds a day across three days of checking. Straightforward process, reasonable cost.

The crystal on my grandmother's dress watch had a deep scratch across it — not ideal for something I wear to work. The replacement was done neatly and the case was polished gently enough that it still looks its age rather than brand new. The pre-work conversation was useful; I could say exactly what I wanted left alone.

My father's chronograph hadn't run properly in about twelve years. I was sceptical about leaving it with anyone. The stage-by-stage updates I received during the six-week overhaul changed that. At each stage I understood what was happening and why. The watch now runs — that alone is more than I hoped for when I walked in.

I have two watches serviced here now — once a year each. The timing record they hand over is useful because I can compare it year to year. Nothing flashy about the place, which is actually what I want. Just someone who knows what they're doing and writes it down.

The overhaul took longer than originally anticipated — a part had to be sourced, which added about two weeks. They let me know before sourcing it, which I appreciated. The watch was well-packaged for the return journey and is now running properly. Communication throughout was consistent.

I wanted the case cleaned and the crystal replaced, but I was worried about the original brushed finish being lost. I asked specifically before agreeing to proceed, and they noted exactly what to leave alone. The result respected the watch's original look. I'll be back when the movement needs attention.

Three Pieces in Detail

A closer look at the process and outcome for three different jobs — each presenting distinct challenges.

The Situation

1970s Manual-Wind Stopped Running

The owner's grandfather's manual-wind watch had stopped after what appeared to be a mainspring failure. The watch had not been serviced in over thirty years and had corroded lubricants throughout the movement.

The Approach

Full Disassembly, Component-Level Assessment

Full disassembly confirmed a fatigued mainspring alongside dried lubricants across all pivot points. A compatible replacement mainspring was sourced and discussed with the owner before fitting. The movement was cleaned ultrasonically in stages and reassembled with fresh lubrication.

The Outcome

Running Within Normal Parameters

After five weeks of work and a further week of regulated observation, the movement ran within +12/−8 seconds per day across five positions. The owner received a stage-by-stage record of the overhaul.

Duration: 6 weeks

The Situation

Automatic Chronograph — Erratic Pusher Operation

A modern automatic chronograph had developed an inconsistency in the start/stop pusher — sometimes failing to engage on the first press. The date wheel had also become intermittently sticky.

The Approach

Column Wheel Inspection & Calendar Adjustment

Assessment identified worn detent springs within the column wheel mechanism and improper calendar quickset adjustment from a previous service. Both areas were addressed during a full movement service, with new detent springs installed where the originals had fatigued.

The Outcome

Consistent Pusher Action Restored

Both the chronograph function and date mechanism performed correctly following completion. The owner tested the watch for two weeks before confirming satisfaction. Service record included notes on the specific parts replaced and why.

Duration: 4 weeks

The Situation

Crystal Damage After Travel Impact

A dress watch with a domed acrylic crystal had received a hard impact during travel, leaving a crack running from the bezel edge to the centre. The case itself was unmarked.

The Approach

Crystal Sizing & Careful Fitting

A domed acrylic of the correct diameter and height was sourced to match the original profile. The owner was shown the replacement before fitting to confirm it matched their expectations. Fitting was carried out without disturbing the case finish.

The Outcome

Crystal Replaced, Case Untouched

The replacement crystal matched the domed profile and diameter of the original. The case finish remained exactly as it arrived. Completed in eight days from drop-off to collection.

Duration: 8 days
