Reasons to Choose a Workshop That Explains Its Work

Watch servicing isn't complicated to understand — it just takes someone willing to explain it. Gearsmith is built around that idea.

What You Can Expect

Six things that shape how every job at Gearsmith is handled.

Written Assessment Before Any Work

Every piece is evaluated first. The assessment is shared in writing so you know what is planned before anything is touched.

Service Record With Every Job

A written record of components inspected, parts replaced, and timing readings is issued at collection — yours to keep with the piece.

Preservation-Minded Approach

The aim is always to restore function and condition while keeping original details — patina, case lines, and dial character — intact.

Clear, Ongoing Communication

If the scope changes during work, you hear about it before anything proceeds. Nothing is done without the owner's knowledge.

Mechanical & Quartz Both Covered

The workshop handles quartz, hand-wind, automatic, and complex multi-complication movements across a range of makes and eras.

Stated Pricing, No Surprises

Each service has a published price. Additional costs are discussed and agreed before they are incurred — not discovered at collection.

In Depth

The Experience Behind the Work

The lead watchmaker at Gearsmith has spent fourteen years working on movements across a wide range of calibers — from common quartz modules to complex vintage Swiss and Japanese mechanisms. That range of exposure matters when a movement presents an unusual problem or requires a non-standard approach.

Complication and heritage overhauls require a particular kind of patience. The watchmaker here was drawn to that work specifically — understanding what an older movement was designed to do and working within those original parameters, rather than around them.

Fourteen years across quartz, automatic, hand-wind, and complication calibers

Specific experience with vintage movements from major Swiss and Japanese makers

Chronograph, calendar, and repeater complications handled individually

Calibrated ultrasonic cleaning equipment for individual components

Multi-position timing machine to record rate before and after regulation

Manufacturer-specification lubricants stored and applied correctly

Equipment Used the Right Way

Good tools matter, but using them correctly matters more. Ultrasonic cleaning is common, but the settings, solutions, and drying procedures vary by component type. At Gearsmith, equipment is calibrated to the task rather than applied generically.

Timing machines record the movement's rate across multiple positions — crown up, crown down, dial up, dial down. The readings form part of the written service record you receive at collection.

A Process Built Around the Owner

Most workshop processes are built for the workshop's convenience. Here, the sequence is structured to keep the owner informed: assessment before work, notification if anything changes, written record at completion.

If you need to ask a question mid-service, contact is accessible. If you decide not to proceed after the assessment, the watch is returned without charge for the assessment itself.

Assessment reviewed with the owner before any disassembly

Direct contact available throughout the service period

No obligation to proceed after receiving the written assessment

Three services with fixed published prices: ฿3,910 / ฿7,310 / ฿11,730

Additional costs discussed and agreed before any extra work is done

Written record adds documented history — a long-term value to the piece

Pricing That Is Stated, Not Estimated

Three services, three published prices. You know the figure before you decide whether to proceed. If a complication requires more time or a part needs sourcing, that conversation happens before costs are incurred — not at the point of collection.

The service record issued with each completed job also adds documented history to the piece itself, which is worth considering for watches that may be passed on or eventually resold.

What Makes This Different

Not Commonly Found Elsewhere

Stage-by-Stage Documentation for Heritage Work

For complication and vintage overhauls, documentation isn't a summary at the end — it's built up through the job. Each stage of disassembly, assessment, and reassembly is noted, so the final record reflects what actually happened throughout.

No Obligation After Assessment

Once the assessment has been completed and shared, the decision to proceed is entirely yours. There is no charge for the assessment itself if you choose not to go ahead — a position that most workshops simply do not offer.

Limited Concurrent Pieces

The workshop deliberately limits the number of pieces in service at any time. This keeps the attention on each job consistent rather than spreading capacity across a volume-first operation.

Pre-Polishing Dialogue for Case Work

Before any surface work begins on a case, the planned approach is discussed with the owner. Original finishes, angles, and surface treatments are noted and preserved wherever the owner wishes — nothing is polished away by default.

See What a Careful Assessment Looks Like

Bring your watch in or send a description. The assessment costs nothing if you decide not to proceed — it is simply a conversation about what the piece might need.
